Why Move to Boise? (21 Reasons From A Local’s Perspective)

Boise has become a popular place to call home. With many people moving from California, Utah, Oregon, and Texas to name a few, you might be wondering; “Why should I move to Boise?”

In this article, you’ll learn all the reasons why I think Boise may be the perfect place for you. Of course, I’ll let you be the judge.

Why Move to Boise?

1. Boise offers a unique blend of urban amenities in a rural setting

Boise is an amazing city that offers the best of both worlds: a vibrant urban experience with all the amenities and entertainment you’d expect out of city life, as well as the peace and serenity of a rural setting.

From the downtown to the outskirts of the city, you’ll find a unique mix of both.

The city’s downtown area is bustling with restaurants, local shops, and nightlife, while just a few minutes away, you’ll find quiet neighborhoods and stunning views of the foothills.

So whether you’re looking to enjoy a night out on the town with some friends, or get away from all the noise and head up into the mountains for a relaxing day trip, you can do both with ease.

2. It’s an ideal location for outdoor enthusiasts

Boise is a paradise for outdoor fans as the city is packed with an abundance of options for exciting activities. From the lush green foothills to the winding Boise River, there’s something for every type of explorer.

Hikers, bikers, and climbers love the wide array of trails for all levels of experience, while kayakers and rafters can explore the cool waters of the river.

There are also countless places for fishing enthusiasts to cast a line in the river, while birdwatchers can observe some of the state’s most unique species.

Whether you’re taking a peaceful stroll along the Boise Greenbelt or exploring the challenging trek up to Table Rock, Boise is the perfect place to get outdoors.

And the best part is that everything is so close. Table Rock is on the outskirts of town while the river practically runs through the center of the city.

3. The cost of living is lower than in other cities of similar size

Boise is an attractive option for those looking for a city with a lower cost of living. According to the cost of living calculator, the cost of living in Boise is 50% cheaper than that of California. That includes housing, food, utilities, and transportation.

With a lower cost of living, you can enjoy an increased quality of life while still being able to save money.

And with the money saved you have more resources to explore the area’s outdoor recreation, unique restaurants, and lively music scene.

4. The downtown area is vibrant and alive

Boise’s downtown area is a truly special place with various options for entertainment, culture, and activities.

From the well-known Boise River Greenbelt to the lively 8th Street Marketplace, downtown Boise is full of life.

In addition, the city is home to numerous theaters, museums, and galleries, providing a wealth of cultural experiences.

The first play I ever watched was at the Boise Little Theatre. I didn’t even know I liked plays until I watched one—and I discovered that after over 20 years of living here.

Just when I thought I had seen it all.

Also, within close proximity of downtown, you’ll find a number of parks (Hyde Park is the local favorite), cafes, and pubs to explore, making it a prime spot for a night out with friends or a relaxing day with your family.

5. There are many new businesses and a strong job market

Boise is a city of opportunity. With a strong job market, there are new businesses popping up all the time, and more are being built as I write this.

This is great news for those looking for employment as well as those looking to start their own business.

With an abundance of potential employers and entrepreneurs (that’s me), Boise is the perfect place for people looking to take advantage of the burgeoning economy.

I mean come on, we have a freaking Tesla dealership here! In fact, I’m pretty sure there are more Teslas on the road now than gas-powered vehicles. At least, it feels that way.

Nonetheless, there’s still so much empty land in Boise and surrounding areas that the potential to open up your dream business is real.

Or even work for a startup (there are a ton of them here).

6. Boise is home to Boise State University

Boise State University (BSU) offers an amazing college experience for students who are looking to expand their knowledge and gain valuable skills.

Surrounded by stunning mountain views, the campus offers a beautiful and diverse community.

With a plethora of academic and extracurricular activities, BSU has something for everyone.

From traditional four-year programs to adult education and online degrees, BSU has a wide variety of degree options to choose from.

Boise State also prides itself on its ability to provide a great education at an affordable cost, making it easy for students to get the most out of their college experience.

On top of its excellent academic programs, Idahoans have a deep love for BSU football (you know, the famous blue turf).

For the last decade, BSU has consistently been at the top of its division and has brought excitement and pride to the state of Idaho.

The season always starts with a heightened sense of anticipation and excitement, and there are always tailgates and post-game celebrations, no matter the weather.

7. The city has a strong sense of community

From the small business owners and entrepreneurs who have been here for generations, to the friendly people who always have time to lend a helping hand, Boise is a city that takes pride in its sense of togetherness.

With a variety of activities and events, there is always something to do and some way to get involved in the community.

From the numerous farmer’s markets to the community gardens, you can always find something to do that will bring you closer to your neighbors.

For someone like yourself who’s considering the move to Boise, this strong sense of community is a great benefit.

Whether it be joining a local organization, attending a local event, or simply getting to know your neighbors, there are plenty of opportunities to become part of the community and volunteer your time.

8. There are four distinct seasons

Boise is well-known for its unique climate with four distinct seasons. In the summer, temperatures are hot, reaching the nineties and beyond, while the winter months are frigid with snow covering the ground.

Spring and fall are mild, and also happen to be my favorite time of the year.

Trying to explain the feelings I get around these times of the year doesn’t do it justice—you have to experience it for yourself.

I will say that fall brings the most colorful trees you’ve ever seen, while you can literally smell spring in the air.

There’s nothing quite like it.

11. Arts and culture scene

From its plethora of art galleries to its music venues, Boise offers something for everyone in the cultural arts realm. The Boise Art Museum is a great place to start for anyone looking to explore the art and culture of the area.

Here, you can view contemporary and traditional works from renowned artists from around the world. The museum also hosts rotating exhibitions and educational events throughout the year.

Theatergoers can find plenty to appreciate in Boise as well. The Morrison Center is home to an array of touring Broadway musicals, plays, and concerts throughout the year.

There are also several smaller theaters in town that focus on local productions and community theater pieces such as Opera Idaho and Ballet Idaho.

Boise’s cultural scene isn’t just limited to art galleries and theaters; there are plenty of activities for those looking to explore the city’s cultural side without going inside a building.

For instance, you can take part in one of the city’s many festivals such as Alive After Five which offers a unique mix of local bands, DJs, food, art, and more!

No matter what type of artistic experience you’re looking for, you’re sure to find something special in Boise’s diverse arts and culture scene!

9. Boise is highly walkable

Boise is a highly walkable city. With its many sidewalks, parks, and trails, it’s easy to explore the city on foot. The downtown area is especially conducive to pedestrians, with wide sidewalks that make it easy to get around.

The Boise River Greenbelt is a great way to take in the beauty of the city while getting some exercise.

The path winds along the river and provides breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and cityscape.

The neighborhoods in Boise are also designed with pedestrians in mind.

There are plenty of walking routes that connect neighborhoods to one another and make it easy for locals to explore their own towns without having to drive.

It’s not uncommon to find shortcuts that lead to nearby stores and restaurants without needing a car.

Boise also has several urban parks that provide a great place for residents and visitors alike to take a stroll or have an outdoor picnic.

Julia Davis Park is particularly popular among locals, with its lush green lawns, playgrounds, and outdoor amphitheater, perfect for soaking up the sunshine or watching your favorite band perform.

That said, Boise also has numerous bike lanes throughout the city so cyclists can get around safely.

This makes Boise an ideal destination for those who want a convenient way to explore the area without relying on cars or public transportation.

15. Offers a diverse population

With over 235,000 people, Boise is home to a wide range of ethnicities and nationalities.

Residents come from all across the globe, including refugees from war-torn countries that have found a safe haven in Boise.

To help these newcomers integrate into their new life, the city has dedicated programs and organizations that provide education, job support, and other resources.

The presence of many different cultures in Boise has enriched the area with beautiful art, music, and cuisine—all of which can be experienced in local markets and festivals throughout the year.

From Mexican tamales to Middle Eastern falafel to African injera bread, Boise’s restaurants offer a wide variety of international cuisines for locals and visitors alike.

Additionally, Boise is home to many cultural centers such as the Basque Museum & Cultural Center that honor this city’s unique heritage and traditions.

Boise’s diversity also extends beyond its international citizens.

All of these communities are celebrated in Boise with pride parades throughout the year that promotes acceptance and inclusion for everyone regardless of background or beliefs.

Whether you’re looking for cultural experiences or just want to meet new people from different backgrounds, Boise is a welcoming place where all can feel at home.

16. Strong public transportation system

Boise offers an efficient and robust public transportation system to meet the needs of anyone, regardless of which area you live in.

The city bus is a popular choice of transportation, offering frequent stops throughout the city, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.

The bus fare will set you back $1.50 for a one-way trip, or you can get an all-day pass for $2.50.

Furthermore, you can buy monthly or annual passes, and there are discounted rates for students, seniors, people with disabilities, and medicare cardholders.

Alternately, taxis are available, as well as ride-share services like Uber and Lyft that can be easily summoned with a few taps on your phone.

Furthermore, Boise has embraced new technology by introducing electric scooters and e-bikes that are scattered throughout the city.

These eco-friendly alternatives offer an easy and affordable way to get around town.

And when I say they’re scattered throughout the city, I mean it! They’re on every street corner.

So, whether you’re looking for a quick ride to work or just want to explore the city, Boise’s public transportation system has you covered.

17. Excellent schools and a low crime rate

The city is home to an array of educational institutions, ranging from primary and secondary schools to universities and beyond.

All of these institutions possess a high quality of education, with students consistently achieving excellent grades.

Additionally, Boise is home to a variety of public libraries and other resources which are available to students and non-students of all ages.

Aside from its impressive educational credentials, Boise also enjoys a low crime rate.

It’s known to have low levels of violent crime, theft, and other offenses. You can walk around in most neighborhoods, even at night, and feel safe (not that I’m recommending this).

This feeling of safety combined with the prominent schools makes Boise an immaculate place to raise a family.

18. Boise has a number of exciting annual events

It’s true. Boise hosts numerous annual events that draw thousands of people from around the state, as well as nearby states, into the city.

The Boise Idaho Fair is a must-experience spectacle featuring carnival rides, games, live performances, and delicious food.

The fair is generally held at the end of August, right before the kids go back to school after their summer break.

The Treefort Music Festival is another massive multi-day event featuring an array of musical genres, art installations, and workshops, totaling over 900 official events.

People come from all over the US to experience this festival that’s held smack-dab in the middle of downtown Boise, usually in March.

If you’re looking for a more family-friendly music festival, I recommend the Boise Music Festival which features local and national acts.

Also, Art in the Park is another cool activity held annually that showcases local artists and their spectacular works.

Another ultra-popular event is the Hyde Park Street Fair. This beloved tradition has been bringing together the local community with a variety of vendors, music, and food in Boise’s most popular park.

And the events don’t stop come winter, you just have to wear warmer clothes.

The Winter Garden Aglow is a popular attraction that lights up the city with thousands of sparkling lights and holiday-themed activities.

The Garden Aglow holds a warm place in my heart as it’s one of the first dates me and my wife went on.

It’s a truly magical experience.

19. Several major sports teams

Boise is a sports-lover’s paradise. From college sports to professional teams, there is something for everyone to cheer for. Boise State Football has a long history of success, with a winning record that has earned the team national recognition.

The Hawks, Boise’s professional baseball team, has a fiery, loyal fan base that comes out to cheer the team on.

And don’t forget the Steelheads, our city’s professional hockey team. With a talented roster of players and passionate fans, the Steelheads have become a staple of Boise’s sports scene.

No matter what your sport of choice is, Boise has something for you.

If you’ve never watched a hockey game before, you have to watch the Steelheads play! It’s intense to say the least.

20. Boise provides a thriving nightlife

From bars and breweries to concert houses and other fun events, there’s something for everyone in Boise’s nightlife.

For a true taste of the city, nothing beats The Cactus, one of Boise’s most popular and oldest bars.

This laid-back pub has been serving the Treasure Valley beer and other frozen drinks since the 1930s!

If you’re more into craft beer, Boise offers plenty of breweries to explore as well.

Barbarian Brewing is a great place to sample some of the city’s finest beers and the taproom regularly hosts live music, trivia nights, and other events.

For a taste of the local music scene along with big-name artists, head over to the Knitting Factory, a concert house that brings some of the biggest names in music to Boise.

21. Close proximity to the mountains

The city’s close proximity to the mountains allows for easy access to outdoor activities including numerous hiking trails, bike courses, and snow-covered mountains to shred come winter.

With a variety of outdoor activities just minutes away, Boise is the perfect place to explore nature.

Even the nearby foothills enable you to take in stunning views of the city and surrounding areas below.

Whether you’re looking for a cool summer escape or a winter wonderland, you’ll find plenty to do high above the city.

Even if you want to admire the mountains from afar, you can.

Pretty much anywhere you drive in Boise—including as you head into town from the west—the mountains are always in the backdrop providing a picturesque view. This is my favorite thing about driving into Boise from my hometown of Caldwell.
